Insects are vital to life: they pollinate plants, decompose organic matter, feed countless animals, and control pests. Their roles sustain ecosystems and benefit us all.
They pollinate
Insects are responsible for pollinating around 90% of all flowering plants in the world. All kinds of insects, from bees to grasshoppers to beetles play a crucial role in pollination. Even cockroaches are pollinators! Without them, we would not be able to grow a large majority of our food.
They decompose
Insects can eat all kinds of waste, such as dead leaves and wood, animal waste and other dead insects! This makes them vital decomposers in all ecosystem as they cycle nutrients back so that other organisms can flourish!
They are a food source
Insects are numerous and can be found in almost every ecosystem. This makes them very accessible as a nutrient source. They are food for all kinds of organisms, like mammals, birds, reptiles as well as plants and other insects!
They are predators
Insects are valuable control for all kinds of pests. Some, like the ladybird beetles gobble up all sorts of aphids, mealybugs and even mildew, making them beneficial allies to farmers.
